If your basement is unfinished there are finishes you can place on the walls and floor to seal them. These finishes will help you waterproof the surfaces preventing water damage from water build up around the home. Another preventative measure you can take to protect your home located in a flood zone is to check the home’s foundation for cracks. If there are any cracks in the foundation they should be sealed with caulk and cement to make them flush with the surrounding area. To make the seal even stronger you can also add a waterproof finish after sealing the crack as well.

5. Lift outdoor equipment above the flood line

Aside from protecting the inside of your home, it’s also smart to protect the outside of your home located in a flood zone. Equipment, like air conditioning units for example, are expensive to replace and excessive water can cause damage or cause them to be completely destroyed. Because of this it’s important to also follow the flood line when placing these around your property. Lifting outdoor equipment above the flood line can help you be proactive about a potential flood and save you a ton of money.
