About Okemos

As an unincorporated community within Meridian Township and only a few minutes from East Lansing, Okemos is small enough to give each resident a sense of community, but large enough to provide access to many convenient amenities. Many homeowners, especially families, who have considered moving to East Lansing, but want to be farther away from busy Michigan State University, find Okemos to be perfect for them.

With interstate 96 to the south and highway 127 not far away, Okemos is easy to get to from any direction. This makes it a popular commuter town, however many residents also live and work in or near the community. A number of ponds, natural areas, parks, streams, trails and the Red Cedar River make Okemos naturally beautiful, and it’s easy to find a scenic spot to enjoy peace and quiet.

1. Briarwood

The Briarwood area has a strong sense of community, and works hard to keep the neighborhood scenic and peaceful. Located between Okemos road, Dobie road and Kinawa drive, it’s centrally located, but shielded from busy traffic. Briarwood gives residents access to several unique features, including the Briarwood recreation park and soccer field, a pond, natural area and community garden.

All residents are members of the Briarwood Homeowners Association, which is responsible for maintaining the safety, harmony, and uniformity of the community, and organizes community events.

2. Georgetown

Georgetown is a beautiful, upscale community in Okemos full of brand new homes and lots waiting for new homeowners. Purchasing a lot to build your home can be a great solution if you cannot find your home during periods of low housing inventory. You can be a part of this newly flourishing community when you purchase a lot, and you can build your home exactly as your envisioned. Located between Powell and Tihart roads on the northeast side of Okemos, this area is quiet without being far-removed. With Wildlife Lake to the north and a stream bordering the community, it is lush and peaceful. A few minutes walk to the west, however, you have access to the Meridian Mall. This gives residents the perfect position between a natural landscape and convenient shopping.

3. Indian Hills

Located between Mt Hope and Okemos roads, Indian Hills is nestled in a quiet corner of Okemos with particularly scenic surroundings. The Red Cedar River borders the community to the east, with Wonch Park and Ferguson Park on either side. To the west is Herron Creek, and the Indian Hills golf course lies to the north. Bordered on all sides by pleasant greenery and well-kept spaces, Indian Hills is naturally secluded, though it is only a few miles from the Meridian Mall to the north, and the interstate to the south.

4. Ottawa Hills

Located on the north side of Grand River Avenue and across from the Meridian Mall, Ottawa Hills is close to some of the most frequented areas in Okemos, however the area retains it sense of closeness and community. With Nancy Moore park only a short walk away, residents have ready access to one of the most beautiful natural areas in Okemos. The Indian Hills golf course lay on the other side of Grand River, also only a short walk away. The nearby restaurants, retailers, coffee shops and grocery stores combined with the lush natural scenery make Ottawa Hills a very desirable neighborhood in Okemos.

5. Hiawatha Lakes

With Hiawatha Elementary School on the edge of this community, Hiawatha Lakes is ideal for families. Located near the intersection of Dobie and Jolly roads, the area is protected from busy traffic, but it only takes a few minutes to the stores and shops nearby, and is a short distance from the highway. The variety of large, modern homes with sprawling yards, as well as the safe, quiet streets, makes Hiawatha Lakes one of the most desirable communities for expecting couples and growing families.

6. Sundance Estates

Sundance Estates is a neighborhood in the Okemos area located off of Hulett and Bennett road. This area gets just enough distance from busy roads, so residents can enjoy a quiet walk along the tree-lined sidewalks. It's close proximity to Okemos High School makes it a favorite among families. Delta pond and the gardens surrounding the Delta Dental complex as well as the East Lawn memorial gardens are within walking distance. Driving in any direction from this neighborhood, you'll find brand new subdivisions being built that offer the same appeal as this established neighborhood.
